2014 Media Coverage

VHC Media Summary

This year we reached out to all of the local LA TV stations, newspapers and radio stations, in addition to entertainment outlets, first with a round of emails and then with a media alert. As a result, KCBS/KCAL, KABC and KNBC all came onsite, along with a reporter from examiner.com

The media outreach efforts garnered three news segments and two news articles to date:

  • KABC - news at 4 p.m. Sunday
  • KCAL - news at 9 p.m. Sunday
  • KCBS - news at 11 p.m., Sunday
  • Examiner.com - article by Liz Kelly
  • LA Daily News - article by Dennis McCarthy

All in all, the media coverage is a great success for the VHC event and has served to broaden awareness in our community and draw attention to an event that has long deserved to receive media attention. Below are summaries and links to all coverage.

KABC

KABC aired a short segment on the VHC event during their 4 p.m. broadcast. Larry Allen was interviewed and they also featured comprehensive footage of the food tent and general event. To access the segment, click on this link and download the version that you need - for Windows, MAC or smartphones.

KCAL 9

KCAL ran a segment at 9 p.m. featuring interviews with Pearl Harbor survivor Curly Elliott and former Dodger star Al (The Bull) Ferrara, as well as footage of Danny and the Dents, Veteran attendees, culinary staff and general footage of the event.

KCBS

KCBS ran a segment at 11 p.m., which is narrated by anchor Serene Branson and is a shorter version of the KCAL segment, featuring interviews with Pearl Harbor survivor Curly Elliott and former Dodger star Al (The Bull) Ferrara, as well as footage of Danny and the Dents, Veteran attendees, culinary staff and general footage of the event.

LA Daily News

We received a mention in Dennis McCarthy's column, which is widely read by local Veterans:

Curly and a handful of other Pearl Harbor survivors from our local cities will be joining more than 1,200 veterans taking part in the 22nd annual Veterans Holiday Celebration this Sunday, Dec. 7, at the West Los Angeles VA facility, 11301 Wilshire Blvd., from noon to 5:30 p.m.

Examiner.com

Liz Kelly posted an article following the event that is a wonderful summary of the event, complete with 20 photos.
